With the International ComicCon in full swing this week, Ninthlink’s “Superhero” Exhibit was a rollicking success of popular and fine art, music, food, beer, Effen Vodka, and friends.
The event went from 7 pm to well past midnight at The Warehouse Space, 1616 National Avenue, in the newly re-envisioned East Village arts district where “Old” San Diego meets the “New” San Diego with urban dwelling and aesthetic opportunity.
On hand were the Ninthlink employees donning black nylon capes with the Ninthlink logo printed boldly on the fabric, showing what superheroes they can truly be.
“So what are their super powers?” some were asked. One employee said he could fly but only alone, he couldn’t pick anyone up and fly them away to the stars; another said she could teleport to any place on the planet with a blink of an eye “and faster than e-mail on a T-1 line.”
The artwork on display was eclectic and superb, often a topic of conversation among the attendees. The theme, of course, was the image of the superhero in today’s visual culture—Wonder Woman, Captain America, Wolverine, everyday people doing heroic things, and even Godzilla (c’mon, the Big mean Green Lizard is a hero to some!) were just some of the images on display.
At the center of this exhibit was Mark Murphy, local author, publisher, and designer whose company, Murphy Art Books, specializes in the fine art of limited collector’s editions and the craft of the “book arts object” which has a tradition going back to the 18th Century when Benjamin Franklin was printing Poor Richard’s Almanac. Many of the artists in the exhibit have editions printed by Murphy Art Books.
Murphy Art Books can be found in Booth #4933 at the ComicCon all weekend.
Other artists from the ComicCon were at the party and admiring the art on the walls. These artists came from all across the globe, working in various capacities in the comic and visual industry, professionals all—or, in ComicCon terms, “pros.”
“I’m just a bro among the pro’s,” said Ninthlink’s Jeromy Stallings. His brother, Matt, Ninthlink’s lead designer, had an art piece on exhibit of “Static Man”! – appropriate in todays digitized world where eyes are constantly glued to laptops, cell phones, plasma television screens and many other types of digital Paraphernalia.
Alex Smith, one of Ninthlinks rock star programmers, performs in local band, The Modlins, and The Modlins played a fun, danceable set during the exhibit that has attendees swinging the nostalgic tunes of a bygone era.
All the sushi anyone could desire was provided by Sushi on a Roll and Just Taste It Catering elegantly bestowed various delightful finger foods and tasty samples, with beverages offered by Effen Vodka and HiFructose.
The International ComicCon continues through Sunday, July 27, at the San Diego Concourse and Convention Center. Come on down, pay a visit to the Murphy Art Books booth, check out the movie stars and attendees in costumes, and engross yourself in sheer fun and escapism into the worlds of human imagination!
